Hicimos un buen trabajo cortando todas las flores y el césped de raíz para renovar el jardín. ¿Volvería a crecer algo en aquellas jardineras desnudas? «Si se riegan, sí». Pero a nadie ponían a regar. Pasados unos años, unos cuantos se frotaban las manos; ese gran espacio ya no podría ser considerado zona verde por la ausencia de plantas. En nuestro último día, cortamos las últimas flores y lloramos de impotencia. Peor aún lo tenían las abejas, que ya no tenían adonde ir.

We did a good job, cutting all the flowers and grass from the roots to renovate the garden. Would anything grow back in those bare planters? «If watered, yes.» But no one was put to water them. After a few years, some people rubbed their hands; that large space could no longer be considered a green area due to the absence of plants. On our last day, we cut the last flowers and cried powerlessly. The bees had it even worse, they no longer had a place to go.

I love the line, «we did a good job». It’s the jobs we are doing well and being rewarded for often that is the cause of our disaster. We need new jobs…
